Det finns många varianter av blomflugor och vackra är dom. Många förväxlar dem med bin, getingar och humlor vilket blir helt fel. De tillhör insekts ordningen tvåvingar, vilket innebär ca 6000 kända arter i världen samt drygt 350 arter i Sverige. De äter nektar och pollen från blommor och kan även hovra i luften vid blommorna.
